Marymoor Park:

Wayfinding

Design Concept

This passion project was focused on breathing new life into an already extremely recognizable park. Marymoor park is King Counties first and largest state park. They host a number of events and see over 3 million people a year. However the park is still hard to navigate for such a large number of visitors. As part of the project, a landmark concept was developed to provide visitors with clear and identifiable points of reference throughout the park. This landmark design not only serves as a visual icon, but also provides essential wayfinding information to guide visitors through the vast park space.

I also created a system of wayfinding signage that works in conjunction with the landmarks to enhance the overall visitor experience. By strategically placing these signs at key decision points, visitors can easily navigate the park's various attractions and amenities, reducing confusion and improving overall satisfaction. The resulting design achieves a balance between functionality and aesthetics, creating an iconic and memorable experience for park visitors.

Problem

The challenge for this project was to create a landmark and wayfinding design that not only simplified navigation for the millions of visitors to Marymoor Park, but also captured the unique spirit and natural beauty of the park. The I had to consider the park's size, diverse offerings, and the varying needs of its visitors to develop a cohesive and effective solution. Additionally, the design had to be sustainable, durable, and easily maintainable to ensure its longevity and continued success. The challenge was to create a design that not only improved functionality, but also added value to the park's overall visitor experience.

Outcome

The outcome of this project is a landmark and wayfinding design that enhances the visitor experience at Marymoor Park. The new landmark concept provides clear and recognizable points of reference, while the wayfinding signage system guides visitors to the park's various amenities and attractions. The design achieves a balance between functionality and aesthetics, creating an iconic and memorable experience for visitors. By improving navigation and reducing confusion, the design adds value to the park's overall visitor experience, making it more accessible and enjoyable for the millions of people who visit each year. Additionally, the sustainable, durable, and easily maintainable design ensures its longevity and continued success.

Process

Park visitors

To ensure that the landmark and wayfinding design met the needs of Marymoor Park's diverse audience, I conducted research to understand the park's visitors. The research revealed that the park attracts a wide range of individuals, including people who enjoy the outdoors, dog owners and lovers, RC hobbyists, sports enthusiasts, families, kids, and those looking to socialize with friends outdoors.

By understanding the park's audience and their specific needs, I was able to work towards developing a comprehensive solution that would improved navigation and accessibility throughout the park.

Visual Vision

The visual vision aimed to capture the park's diverse activities and visitors with their pets. wanted to create a concept that would be easily recognizable and memorable, while also representing the park's unique spirit and natural beauty.

The resulting design showcases various park activities, such as sports, picnics, and outdoor events, as well as visitors enjoying these activities, including families, kids, and individuals with dogs. By incorporating these elements, the visual vision not only serves as a wayfinding tool but also as an iconic representation of the park experience.

Identity - Inspiration & Themes

The collection of images that served as inspiration for the design. The images focus on various themes such as nature, biking, kids, dogs, sports, and fun, which are all important elements of the Marymoor Park experience.

By showcasing these themes, I was able to identify key visual elements and patterns that were incorporated into the final design. The use of these elements helped to create a cohesive and recognizable identity for the park, further enhancing the visitor experience.

Identity - Ideation

During the design process, I iterated on the landmark and wayfinding design by isolating the key elements of the park experience and sketching out various ideas based on these elements. I identified the most important themes and visual elements, such as nature, dogs, sports, and fun, and experimented with different ways to incorporate them into the final design.

By isolating and focusing on these elements, I was able to generate a wide range of design concepts, allowing me to refine and iterate until I arrived at the final design that best captured the essence of Marymoor Park. This iterative process ultimately resulted in a cohesive and effective landmark and wayfinding design that enhances the visitor experience.

Color

Orange, "is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. It represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity... As a citrus color, orange is associated with health... In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance." ("Color Wheel Pro - See Color Theory in Action", 2020)

In this project, I created wireframes using a greyscale format, with white representing the least important information, and black representing the most important. This helped to ensure that the user's focus was on the most important elements of the app. Additionally, I used darker shades of grey to represent actions that the user could take, which made it easier for users to navigate the app and understand what actions they could take at any given point.

Overall, I feel this approach helped to create wireframes that were intuitive and easy to use, ensuring that the app would be user-friendly and enjoyable to use.

Conceptual Design

I chose to go with a bright yellow abstract sculpture to catch the viewers eye, to be recognized, and to be seen from a distance.

It would be a large, 50 to 75 foot tall, anamorphic sculpture design. The sculpture would look different from every angle and would portray kids and a dog playing. This would symbolize the fun, freedom, and happiness of the park.

Learnings

Through this landmark and wayfinding design project for Marymoor Park, I gained valuable insights and learnings. I discovered the importance of conducting thorough research to understand the diverse needs of the park's visitors, including outdoor enthusiasts, families, dog owners, and sports enthusiasts. Additionally, I learned the significance of incorporating key themes such as nature, biking, kids, dogs, sports, and fun into the design, as these elements resonate with the park's identity and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Next steps

Moving forward, I envision implementing the designed landmark and wayfinding system at Marymoor Park. This would involve collaborating with park authorities and stakeholders to secure necessary approvals and funding for the implementation phase. Additionally, I would conduct user testing and gather feedback from park visitors to ensure the design effectively addresses their navigation needs. By continuously evaluating and refining the design based on user feedback, we can ensure that Marymoor Park offers a seamless and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
